On October 15, 2026, “Lost City Books” bookstore in Washington, D.C., hosted an inspiring evening celebrating Bulgarian literature. The renowned Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov and Angela Rodel, the English translator of many of his works, were special guests at an event co-organized with the Embassy of Bulgaria in Washington, D.C.
Chargé d’Affaires Stefka Yovcheva opened the evening, highlighting the creative partnership that earned Gospodinov and Rodel the prestigious International Booker Prize in 2023 for “Time Shelter”. The novel was also the Embassy’s contribution to the EU initiative “EU Ambassadors Book Collection: Words That Unite, Stories That Connect”. Marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, the initiative brought a collection of European literary works to the Library of Congress – a symbol of the enduring cultural ties between Europe and America, strengthened through the power of literature.
Before a packed audience, Gospodinov presented his short story collection “The Man With Many Names”. In a warm and engaging conversation, guided by Ena Selimovic, the author and translator reflected on creativity, memory, and the human stories that connect us across borders and languages. They also discussed the art of translation and the responsibility of conveying not only a work’s meaning, but also its voice, sensitivity, and soul in another language.
The warm reception and numerous questions from the audience affirmed that contemporary Bulgarian literature is winning more and more admirers across the Atlantic. Guests also had the opportunity to have their books signed by the author.
Тhank you, Georgi Gospodinov and Angela Rodel, for this inspiring evening! We look forward to welcoming you back to Washington, D.C.!
