Bulgaria Becomes the 34th Member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Nuclear Energy Agency

On 1 January 2021, Bulgaria was admitted as the 34th member of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and its Data Bank. The accession of Bulgaria to the Agency underlines the developing co-operation between Bulgaria and the OECD. “Bulgaria’s membership will enrich the NEA’s work in areas such as nuclear safety and regulation, decommissioning and radioactive waste management,” said OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría.

Hong Kong: Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the mass arrest of people involved in the July 2020 pro-democracy primary elections

The authorities in Hong Kong arrested over 50 people on 6 January 2021 on charges pursuant to the National Security Law (NSL). The charges in question relate to the holding in July 2020 of pro-democracy primary elections aimed at identifying candidates for the next Legislative Council elections. Those arrested include former opposition lawmakers and civil society activists.

Bulgaria supports the priorities of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union to deliver a fair, green and digital recovery to Europe. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Petko Doykov emphasised this during a video conference with Portugal’s Secretary of State for European Affairs Ana Paula Zacarias. “It is indeed time to deliver,” he added, referring to the motto of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU that began on 1 January 2021.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed the Bulgarian embassies in Belgrade and Zagreb to facilitate the transportation to Croatia of the Bulgarian heavy-duty truck loads of mineral water that is part of the relief aid provided by Bulgaria after the severe earthquake there on 29 December 2020.
