General information
Security level:
Travellers are advised to pay particular attention to their personal safety.
It is recommended to avoid visiting the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) bordering Afghanistan due to difficult accessibility in winter, the concentration of Taliban members and existing social tension.
Avoid travelling at night, in border areas and inland. There are many mined areas in the border areas with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.
The level of security is relatively high in the capital Dushanbe. In general, the situation in the country is relatively peaceful. Caution should be exercised when using taxis that are without the characteristic markings.
When crossing the country, bear in mind: drive in daylight, stop at guarded parking lots near populated areas, strictly observe traffic rules.
Specifics of the legislation
According to Tajik legislation, the existence of a prior work permit is a prerequisite for a foreigner to enter Tajikistan for the purpose of employment. Employed foreigners who are in violation of the legislation in force in the country are subject to extradition by the authorities of the Ministry of Interior.
Homosexuality is not banned in Tajikistan, but it is not accepted.
Healthcare:
Low level of healthcare. A number of infectious diseases are widespread, including poliomyelitis and typhoid. Drinking water from taps is prohibited. The water is not drunk, it is used for washing only after boiling.
Recommended vaccines and personal hygiene advice:
Poliomyelitis immunization is required.
For up-to-date information on other mandatory and/or recommended vaccines you may contact the Regional Health Inspectorates in the country. Yellow fever vaccine is administered at the following regional health inspectorates: Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate; Varna RHI; Burgas RHI; Pleven RHI; Plovdiv RHI; Blagoevgrad RHI and Ruse RHI.
Road traffic:
There is rail and bus public transport. Take particular care when travelling by car in the dark. You need an international and Bulgarian driving licence, as well as civil liability if you are travelling by car.
Practical advice:
More fluid intake and low-fat foods are needed, as well as avoiding alcohol during the hot months. The atmospheric pressure is elevated in the mountainous parts of Pamir.
Local currency:
Somoni (TJS). It is recommended to carry dollars and euros, and to change currency only at designated points.
Travel papers and visas
To enter the country, an international passport is necessary valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry into Tajikistan.
Immunisation against poliomyelitis is required.

According to Decree No. 190 of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan dated 28.03.2024, citizens of the Republic of Bulgaria (with all types of foreign passports) have the right to stay in the Republic of Tajikistan for 30 days without a visa.
In order to attract more investments and promote tourism for foreign citizens, simplified procedures for issuing entry visas to the Republic of Tajikistan are being introduced. Processing visa applications is carried out within 3 / three / days incl. processing and issuing visas for the relevant category.

Certification and Legalisations
In order to be valid in the Republic of Bulgaria and to be usable in front of Bulgarian institutions, all documents issued in Tajikistan to nationals of the Republic of Bulgaria have to bear a seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan. The documents are then authenticated by the Embassy of Tajikistan, accredited to the Republic of Bulgaria – in the case, in the Russian Federation. The signature and the authentications of the consular service are then certified in the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Russian Federation.
Compiled in this way, the documents must be translated by an authorised Translation Agency in Bulgaria, and the translation – legalised by the Certification and Legalisations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.
In case of an emergency – of damaged, lost or stolen passport, nationals of the Republic of Bulgaria can apply for the issuance of an Emergency Travel Document at the Embassy of any European Union Member State in Dushanbe.
