The Islamic Republic of Mauritania

The Republic of Bulgaria does not have a functioning embassy in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Bulgarian citizens residing in Mauritania on a short or long-term basis may address consular matters to the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Tunis.

General information

Security level:

The situation in the country in terms of security is unstable. There are threats of terrorist acts and kidnappings of foreigners.

Healthcare:

The level of healthcare does not comply with european standarts.

Local currency:

The local currency in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is the mauritanian ouguiya (MRO).

Travel papers and visas

Bulgarian citizens must enter Mauritania with a passport valid for at least 6 months at the date of travel. No other special documents are required.

Starting January 5, 2025. any passenger subject to the visa requirement must obtain their electronic visa before boarding to travel to Mauritania. This process must be done exclusively via the official website of the National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles at: www.anrpts.gov.mr.

Consular service

In case of need, Bulgarian citizens residing in Mauritania can turn to the embassies of EU member states on the spot for assistance.
Consular services can be provided at the nearest Bulgarian diplomatic or consular mission.

European Emergency Travel Document:

If you lose your passport during your stay in Mauritania, you can contact the consular section of one of the EU member state embassies operating in the country.

Certifications and legalizations:

In order to be valid in Bulgaria and to be able to serve before the Bulgarian institutions, all documents issued by the authorities in Mauritania to Bulgarian citizens must bear the stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mauritania. Then, they need to be certified by the Embassy of Mauritania in Tunis. The signature and certifications of the Embassy of the Mauritania in Tunis are certified by the Consular Office of the Embassy of Bulgaria in the capital of Tunisia.

Once the documents have been so prepared, they must be translated into Bulgarian by an authorized company in Bulgaria and certified by the Department of Certifications and Legalizations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.
