The development of Bulgaria's relations with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF/IOF) has positioned our country among the Organisation's reliable and leading partners in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region.

In February 2018, Sofia hosted the annual regional meeting of the national correspondents for Francophonie in the CEE member countries of the IOF. This meeting contributed to the preparation of the new IOF four-year programme framework for the period 2019-2022, which was adopted at the XVII Francophonie Forum held in Yerevan in 2018 under the theme "Living together in solidarity, sharing the values of humanism and preserving cultural diversity: sources of peace and prosperity for the Francophone space".

Consistent in its policy of support for the countries of the Western Balkans, Bulgaria supported the applications of Serbia and Kosovo for the status of Associate Members of the IOF. Bulgaria also supported the accession of Gambia, Malta and Ireland to IOF observer status.

Bulgaria contributed to the development of educational and research cooperation in the Francophonie, through the IOF programmes in the field of secondary education and in the field of higher education and research through cooperation with the Francophonie University Agency.
