The Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Nicaragua established diplomatic relations in 1979.

In 1980, Bulgaria opened its embassy in Managua. In 1981, Nicaragua opened its embassy in Sofia. In 1990, the Bulgarian embassy in Managua was closed for financial reasons. In 1993, it was restored to the level of chargés d'affaires, and in 1997 - it was closed again. In 1994, also for financial reasons, Nicaragua closed its embassy in Sofia.

Since 2004, Mr. Julio César Avilés has been appointed as Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Nicaragua with consular district the territory of the country.
