The Fifth Parade of Bulgaria in Chicago Once Again United the Community for May 24.
The Bulgarian community in Chicago once again filled the streets of Elk Grove Village with Bulgarian flags, traditional folk costumes, and festive spirit during the Fifth Parade of Bulgaria. Dedicated to Bulgarian culture, language, and traditions, the event has established itself as one of the largest Bulgarian celebration outside the borders of Bulgaria.
Thousands of Bulgarians from the Chicago area and across the Midwest took part in the parade and concert program, jointly organized by the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Chicago and the Village of Elk Grove Village. According to the organizers, more than 5,000 participants and visitors attended throughout the day.
The celebration began with a festive procession of Bulgarian schools, cultural organizations, folklore ensembles, and dance clubs. Children dressed in traditional costumes carried letters from the Bulgarian alphabet and portraits of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The young participants also congratulated Bulgarian singer Dara on her Eurovision performance by dancing to her song “Bangaranga.”
“For five years now, the Parade of Bulgaria has represented an unprecedented act of unity within the Bulgarian community,” said Svetoslav Stankov, Consul General of Bulgaria in Chicago. According to him, the event has become a symbol of the preserved Bulgarian spirit across the ocean.
As in previous years, Bulgarian schools were at the heart of the celebration. Students recited poetry, performed Bulgarian songs, and demonstrated that even far from their homeland, the Bulgarian language and traditions continue to be passed on to future generations.
One of the highlights of the program was the participation of students from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where Bulgarian language studies have resumed after nearly a 30-year interruption. Lecturer Dr. Iliyana Dimitrova shared that interest in Bulgarian studies has been exceptionally strong and that students are proud to have the opportunity to study Bulgarian at the university. Consul General Svetoslav Stankov added that in less than a year, 18 students have already completed courses in Bulgarian studies, and Bulgarian has become the third most popular language in the Department of Slavic Studies after Russian and Polish.
A special guest at this year’s edition was Orlin Goranov. The popular performer met with members of the community and delivered a concert that became one of the most emotional moments of the celebration.
“We are Bulgarians with a capital ‘B.’ We still have so much to give to the world,” the singer told the audience. He emphasized that Bulgarians in Chicago maintain a strong connection to their homeland and carry Bulgaria in their hearts.
The Parade of Bulgaria was first organized five years ago at the initiative of Consul General Svetoslav Stankov with the goal of uniting Bulgarian organizations and presenting Bulgarian culture to the American public. Today, the event is recognized as one of the most significant manifestations of the Bulgarian diaspora in North America.

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova hosted the exhibition “Bulgaria from a Bird’s Eye View”, celebration dedicated to two of Bulgaria’s most significant national holidays – the Day of Bravery and the Bulgarian Armed Forces, celebrated on 6 May, and 24 May – the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture and of Slavonic Script. The event took place at the Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the United Nations and was attended by ambassadors of UN Member States, representatives of the UN Secretariat, and representatives of the host country. “These holidays embody the strength of the Bulgarian spirit, our historical memory and cultural identity. They remind us of the importance of knowledge, spirituality, courage, and responsibility toward the legacy we leave to future generations,” Ambassador Karadjova said at the opening of the exhibition. Ambassador Karadjova emphasized that the Bulgarian Armed Forces are a symbol of honour, duty and professionalism, with deep-rooted traditions in safeguarding the country’s independence and security. “Today, Bulgaria continues to be a reliable and predictable partner within NATO and the European Union, contributing to peace, stability and international cooperation,” the Permanent Representative of Bulgaria stated. “24 May is one of the brightest and most unifying Bulgarian holidays – a day on which we honour the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and Bulgaria’s contribution to European and world culture. The Cyrillic script, created and developed in Bulgaria, is today an official alphabet in more than ten countries and a symbol of spirituality, education and cultural connection among nations,” Ambassador Karadjova further noted. The exhibition presents Bulgaria in an inspiring and extraordinary way through the lens of the talented photographer Alexander Ivanov. Over the course of 17 years and more than 500 flight hours, he has captured the magic of the four seasons, the majesty of the Rila and Pirin mountains, the beauty of the Black Sea coast and the Rose Valley, as well as iconic historical and cultural landmarks such as Perperikon, the Belogradchik Rocks and Tsarevets Fortress. “In a world marked by challenges and divisions, culture and art continue to serve as a universal language of understanding, dialogue and mutual respect. This is precisely why such events are of particular importance – they build bridges between nations and remind us of the power of cultural diplomacy,” Ambassador Gergana Karadjova also stated. The Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the United Nations in New York extends its heartfelt gratitude to all more than 100 guests who shared this special evening with us and became part of an unforgettable journey ‘from a bird’s eye view’ over Bulgaria.

May 9 – Europe Day was celebrated in Shanghai with a meticulously organized event by the Consulates General of EU Member States on May 6, 2026, at the residence of the Consul General of Belgium. Approximately four hundred guests from all walks of life in the Yangtze River Delta region attended.
Bulgaria was represented with a booth where visitors could taste yogurt made with Bulgarian starter culture, discover Bulgarian cosmetic products containing rose oil, and learn about investment and tourism opportunities in the country.
On behalf of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Ambassador of Cyprus to China, Ms. Koula Sophianou, addressed the event.
On May 9 itself, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) organized a celebration with the participation of managers of European companies in Shanghai, the Consuls General of EU Member States and representatives of Chinese local authorities.
In his speech to the forum, the President of EUCCC Shanghai, Carlo D’Andrea, noted that the EU is united in realizing its vision of openness, the rule of law, fairness, solidarity, and respect for human dignity. He acknowledged that European companies significantly contribute to China’s remarkable economic development through their investments, technology, expertise, industrial ethics, sustainability, standards, and long-term commitment. He called on the Chinese side to respond to these commitments by ensuring conditions that allow fair competition and development. He also expressed his expectation that the EU would outgrow its reactive approach toward China and begin to act with the necessary speed, unity, and a truly strategic and autonomous vision for the future.
The EU Ambassador to China, Jorge Toledo, delivered a video address to those present. In it, he emphasized that the EU’s strength lies in the predictability of its rules of action, clearly defined standards, and equal conditions for the development of all economic entities in EU Member States. He noted that European companies in Shanghai in the fields of automotive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and smart manufacturing are proof that EU-China cooperation is successful when the Chinese side is open to cooperation. He highlighted the role of the European Commission, the Consulates General of EU Member States in Shanghai, and the chambers of commerce and industry of EU Member States in the megapolis, including EUCCC, in maintaining open channels of communication with local authorities in the Yangtze River Delta region, resolving disputes, and creating new opportunities for cooperation with Chinese partners.
On the occasion of Europe Day, EUCCC published messages from its board members and the Consuls General of EU Member States in Shanghai that can be seen at the link below:
