Diplomatic relations were established on May 8, 1910. The relations are close, without controversial or unresolved issues, and Spain is an important partner of Bulgaria in the EU and an ally in NATO. There is a desire to deepen cooperation on issues on the European and Euro-Atlantic agenda, as well as in the fields of investments, trade, culture, education and science.

In recent years, the following visits have been paid at high and top level: of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva (Madrid, November 6, 2017); of the Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy (Sofia, May 15, 2018).
