Bulgaria and Brazil established consular relations in 1922, and in 1934 - diplomatic relations. During World War II diplomatic relations were severed by Brazil. In 1961 they were restored and diplomatic missions were opened at the level of legations. In 1974, they were promoted to embassy level.

Bulgaria has honorary consulates in Santa Catarina, Recife and Belo Horizonte.

In 2011, President Dilma Rousseff paid the first in the history of the bilateral relations state visit to Bulgaria, which gave a strong impetus to the cooperation between the two countries. In 2016, President Rosen Plevneliev paid an official visit to Brazil.

Priority is given to trade and economic relations, with a focus on efforts to attract Brazilian investment in high-tech manufacturing sectors, technology, research and innovation, as well as transport and infrastructure projects.

There are about 3,000 Bulgarians permanently living and temporarily residing in Brazil and they are concentrated mainly in Sao Paulo. There is also a Bulgarian school in the city.
