Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev represented Bulgaria at the regular meeting of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council, held today in Brussels. The two main topics on the agenda were Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East and Syria.

The Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia in Sofia Summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Over Desecration of Bulgarian National Symbols in Skopje

Today, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of North Macedonia, Agneza Rusi Popovska, was summoned to a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Mr Yordan Parvanov, Director General for European Affairs. During the meeting, a protest note was delivered, in which the Bulgarian side expressed serious concern and deep dismay over recent incidents involving the desecration of Bulgarian national symbols on the territory of the neighbouring country.

The meeting is part of the preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in The Hague (24-25 June this year), during which the Alliance is expected to take a number of key decisions.

On 15 May 2025, consultations were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sofia between the head of the Bulgarian delegation, Deputy Minister Elena Shekerletova, and the Minister for European Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, Ms Marie Bjerre. The visit was part of Minister Bjerre’s tour of EU Member States in the context of the upcoming Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the development of bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Uzbekistan, with a focus on consular cooperation and collaboration in the field of labour migration.

Minister Georg Georgiev in Luxembourg: Bulgaria Supports the New Democratic Pact for Europe

"We welcome the initiative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Alain Berset, for a New Democratic Pact for Europe. The Council of Europe must remain one of the guarantors of freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights”. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, in his speech at the 134th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, held in Luxembourg, where the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Alain Berset, presented his initiative for a "New Democratic Pact for Europe".

"Bulgaria possesses a distinctive form of soft power: the quiet strength of tolerance – not the kind born of convenience or political correctness, but one shaped by daily life, by shared stories, by the enduring rhythms of our villages, neighbourhoods and marketplaces. It is a tolerance that has grown through centuries of coexistence and mutual adaptation." With these words, Minister Georgiev addressed the audience during today's presentation of the publication "Togetherness of Religions and Communities in Bulgaria: Dimensions of Public Communication and Diplomacy with Universal Applicability"
