Minister Mitov confers with UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova

12 January 2015 News

Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov held a meeting today with Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova who is paying an official visit to Bulgaria.

Minister Mitov and Irina Bokova once again strongly condemned the attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, expressing the belief that the international democratic community must be united in the fight against threats to security and peace. "Europe must show unity and not succumb to attempts to divide it. Diversity is its strength, not its weakness," the Foreign Minister said.

The two discussed the preparations for the campaign in support of Bokova's bid as United Nations Secretary General with a mandate from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2021. They emphasized the importance of establishing an efficient mechanism for coordination between the Foreign Ministry and the Bulgarian diplomatic missions, which will organize the implementation of all activities and start an active campaign in support of  Bulgaria’s nomination.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister and UNESCO's Director General also discussed the 70th anniversary of the organization, which is marked this year.
