Bulgaria has a long-standing commitment to the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), having been a member of the organization since 1880 and consistently supporting its mission to promote cooperation, equitable access to information and communication technologies, and global connectivity for sustainable development. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Radi Naydenov during the official presentation of the Republic of Bulgaria’s candidacy for re-election to the Council for the 2027-2030 term before the diplomatic corps in the country. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and took place today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For his part, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Dimitar Nedyalkov presented the candidacy, emphasizing Bulgaria’s active role as a member of the Council for more than three decades. “In the digital environment, telecommunications function as critical infrastructure on which all other sectors depend - from the economy to security. That is precisely why participation in the decision-making process requires consistency, expertise, and predictability. Bulgaria has proven that it can be such a partner, and this is also significant in the broader context of dynamic geopolitical processes,” he said.
Before the ambassadors accredited to the country and representatives of the diplomatic corps, Dimitar Nedyalkov further emphasized that, during its mandate for the 2023-2026 period, Bulgaria has consistently supported the adoption of mechanisms to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the use of the Union’s resources, ensuring alignment between strategic and financial planning, particularly through the application of a results-based management approach. Deputy Minister Nedyalkov emphasized that Bulgaria’s candidacy for the ITU Council is a national priority and presented the key messages and vision for the country’s future membership in the Council of the Organization, calling on ITU Member States to support Bulgaria’s candidacy.
