20 January 2026 News

"The opening of the road section from Dimario to the border with Bulgaria at Rudozem will contribute to strengthening economic cooperation, improving transport connectivity, and encouraging contacts between people on both sides of the border." This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, during the official ceremony for the commissioning of the "Dimario – Bulgarian-Greek border" road section, which took place today in the Hellenic Republic.

Minister Georgiev emphasised that the realisation of the project creates prerequisites for the development of tourism, cultural exchange, and the regional economy, and in the long term, will contribute to the well-being of both Bulgaria and Greece. He expressed gratitude to the Greek institutions, the local and regional authorities on both sides of the border, as well as to all those who assisted in the successful realisation of the project.

The ceremony was held in the area of the "Rudozem – Xanthi" border crossing and was hosted by the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Topsidis. From the Greek side, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, and the General Secretary for Infrastructure, Dimitris Anagnopoulos, took part. The Bulgarian delegation was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications, Grozdan Karadzhov.

The road section is located on the territory of the Hellenic Republic and is part of Vertical Axis 70 to the "Egnatia Odos" motorway. It represents the final infrastructural link on the Greek side to the "Rudozem – Xanthi" border crossing and is of key importance for its full functioning as a strategic point for regional connectivity.

"The completion of this project is the result of consistent efforts and constructive cooperation between Bulgaria and Greece. It is an example of good neighbourliness and effective coordination in the interest of citizens and the sustainable development of border regions," Minister Georgiev emphasised.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria maintains an active dialogue with the Greek side with the aim of receiving official notification for the opening of the "Rudozem – Xanthi" border crossing for citizen traffic in the short term.

The new road section is expected to significantly shorten travel time between Southern Bulgaria and the ports of the Aegean Sea, improve transport accessibility to the Rhodope region, and establish itself as an important factor for strengthening trade and tourist flows between the two countries.
