Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Pavlov took part in an event dedicated to the main priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the next six months. The event was organised by PanEuropa Bulgaria and the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus, in partnership with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Diplomatic Institute to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In his address, Deputy Minister Pavlov congratulated the Republic of Cyprus on assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the second time and welcomed its motto, “A Competitive, Sustainable, Strong and Autonomous EU, Open to the World”. He underlined the need for a strong, united and competitive European Union. He also noted that the start of the Cypriot Presidency coincides with an important milestone for Bulgaria – its accession to the euro area, which further consolidates the country’s European identity and strategic choice.

The Deputy Minister highlighted the importance of an adequate financial framework for the next programming period, including sustainable funding for cohesion policy, the Common Agricultural Policy, and the management of the European Union’s external borders. Deputy Minister Pavlov expressed support for the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency.

In the course of his remarks, Bulgaria’s consistent support for Ukraine, for the EU enlargement policy based on individual merit, and for maintaining unity and consensus in the Union’s decision-making processes was reaffirmed. Deputy Minister Pavlov also underlined the importance of enhancing European competitiveness, energy security, and the effective management of migration.
