Ministry of Foreign Affairs Strongly Condemns Attack on the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje
11 January 2026 News
On 11 January this year, an unidentified individual carried out an attack on the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria strongly condemns this act against the building of Bulgaria’s diplomatic mission in Skopje – a symbol of Bulgarian statehood and the official presence of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Republic of North Macedonia.
This constitutes an unacceptable infringement of the status of a diplomatic mission and a gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deep concern that such a brazen act is the result of a systematic lack of response by the competent institutions of the Republic of North Macedonia to previous attacks and acts of vandalism against sites associated with Bulgaria and the Bulgarian community.
This institutional passivity, combined with the tolerated and even incited hate speech against Bulgaria and Bulgarians in our neighbouring country, has created an environment in which such criminal acts are encouraged and escalated.
We insist that the competent authorities of the Republic of North Macedonia immediately take all necessary measures to identify the perpetrator and bring him to full criminal accountability, as well as to guarantee the security of Bulgarian diplomatic and consular missions, their staff and their property.
The Republic of Bulgaria expects the institutions of the Republic of North Macedonia to clearly and unequivocally distance themselves from manifestations of hatred, to effectively counter such crimes, to work in a targeted manner towards creating a fundamentally different public narrative regarding relations with Bulgaria, and to unconditionally fulfil their international obligations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to closely monitor developments in the case and reserves the right to undertake further actions to protect Bulgarian interests.
