Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev participated in the regular meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union in Luxembourg

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev took part in the regular monthly meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union, which was held today in Luxembourg. During the meeting, the ministers discussed key topics, including Russian aggression against Ukraine, EU-Indo-Pacific relations, the situation in the Middle East, as well as developments in Sudan, Moldova and Georgia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also participated in the meeting on the topic of the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. The ministers reviewed the latest developments and reaffirmed the European Union’s determination to continue supporting Kyiv. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, provided information on her visit to Kyiv and the progress of European commitments in the areas of security, military training and financial assistance for Ukraine.

In his statement, Minister Georgiev emphasized that Bulgaria consistently supports the EU’s efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace based on the principles of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and stressed the importance of preserving transatlantic unity. 

Bulgaria also supports the accelerated adoption of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia and initiatives to establish a Special Tribunal for the committed crimes. 

Minister Georgiev emphasized the importance of enhanced cooperation along the EU-NATO line to strengthen the defence capabilities of the Eastern flank and the Black Sea region. He noted that the new EU Strategy for the Black Sea Region creates an opportunity to implement joint projects to increase regional security, stability and connectivity.

In the context of relations between the EU and the Indo-Pacific countries, the ministers discussed preparations for the upcoming Fourth EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum, which will take place on 20-21 November 2025 in Brussels. Bulgaria expressed support for deeper partnership with key countries in the region – India, Australia, Japan and Vietnam – in the areas of security, energy, digitalization and sustainable development.

During the discussion on the situation in the Middle East, the ministers welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas. Minister Georgiev emphasized that Bulgaria supports all diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
