Georg Georgiev: “Energy Security and the Green Transition Are Areas in Which Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia Can Achieve a Strategic Partnership That Will Benefit the Entire Region.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Georg Georgiev, held a meeting with His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during his participation in the Munich Leaders Meeting in AlUla.
During the discussion, both sides underlined the traditionally good relations between Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia in the energy sector and explored opportunities for their further development. “Bulgaria, thanks to its strategic location and infrastructure, is a key energy transit hub in Southeast Europe. Diversification of energy sources and routes is a priority for us, and partnership with Saudi Arabia can contribute to greater resilience and energy independence for the region,” stated Minister Georgiev.
The existing successful partnership between the Bulgarian gas transmission company and Saudi subcontractors in the construction of strategic gas pipelines was noted, further consolidating Bulgaria’s role as an important transit hub. “Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia have already demonstrated their ability to implement successful joint initiatives. We have the potential to build on this cooperation through new projects in the gas sector that will be of strategic importance to our countries and our citizens,” stated Minister Georg Georgiev.
The two ministers also discussed opportunities for partnership in the fields of renewable energy and hydrogen. “Bulgaria is firmly committed to the EU’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, and it is of key importance for us to develop cooperation with partners such as Saudi Arabia in the areas of green energy and new technologies,” stated the Bulgarian Foreign Minister. “Combining Saudi Arabia’s vision with Bulgaria’s regional experience can lead to innovation and sustainable development,” he added.
The two ministers also discussed opportunities for the exchange of experts and joint training programmes in the energy sector, aimed at fostering the development of specialists and the introduction of new technological solutions.
In conclusion, Minister Georgiev and Minister Al Saud expressed their confidence that the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia in the field of energy will contribute to stability, security and sustainable development in Southeast Europe and the Middle East.
