Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev Meets with the Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman during the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly

On the margins of the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, met with his counterpart from the Sultanate of Oman, H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi.
The meeting, initiated by the Omani side, is part of the intensifying political dialogue between the two countries, which began with the historic visit of Minister Al-Busaidi to Bulgaria in July 2025
The two top diplomats discussed concrete steps to deepen bilateral relations and cooperation in sectors of mutual interest – energy, trade, investment, innovation, education and culture. A key focus of the talks was the possibility of opening a Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Muscat, as well as the upcoming first round of political consultations at deputy ministerial level on 30 September 2025 in the Omani capital.
During the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman. The document lays the foundations for a structured exchange of expertise and best practice in the field of diplomatic training.
Minister Georgiev underlined the importance of the upward trend in relations between Bulgaria and Oman and the prospect of further building on it through the realisation of a state visit by the Sultan of Oman to Bulgaria.
Other highlights of the meeting included:
- Identification of mechanisms for expanding trade and economic cooperation;
- Potential for establishing a direct air link between Sofia and Muscat;
- Opportunities for partnership in the field of digital transformation and artificial intelligence, including through the BgGPT project and future cooperation on the OmanGPT initiative.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria highly values the constructive spirit of the meeting and sees it as a strong impetus for further strengthening bilateral partnership with Oman, in a spirit of trust, respect and shared interest.
