"We are gathering at a key moment, as the Sofia Chairmanship coincides with preparations for the 30th anniversary of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) in 2026 – an important milestone that invites both reflection on the past and further action to secure a better future for the region. For three decades, the SEECP has proven itself as the leading regional platform for dialogue, trust-building and cooperation among the capitals of South-East Europe. Even in challenging times, it has promoted unity, security, stability and meaningful partnerships.”. This was stated today in New York by Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev in his address to his SEECP colleagues during the working lunch he hosted on behalf of the Bulgarian Chairmanship of the Process. The informal meeting of the region’s top diplomats was held under the theme: “30 Years of SEECP: Navigating the Future through Regional Stability, Security and Sustainable Transformation.” It was also attended by representatives of the European External Action Service and by Amer Kapetanovic, Secretary-General of the Regional Cooperation Council.
During its term as Chair, Sofia will steer the SEECP with a firm hand under the motto: “Compass towards Stability, Security and Sustainability.” “This compass reflects a balanced and forward-looking approach to our regional challenges – one based on shared responsibility, inclusiveness, practical cooperation and collective ambition,” Georgiev highlighted, outlining the priority areas of the Bulgarian Chairmanship:
• European integration of SEECP participants and reaffirmation of the commitment to a merit-based enlargement process, promoting closer alignment with European standards through good-neighbourly relations, respect for fundamental rights and the rule of law;
• Competitiveness and human capital as vital for unlocking the full potential of the region. We support deeper cooperation between academia, research and entrepreneurship – with particular focus on engaging young people, digital transformation and innovation;
• Regional connectivity, energy resilience and sustainable economic growth. The Sofia Chairmanship promotes green infrastructure, modern transport and energy corridors, and investments in sustainable industries that benefit all SEECP participants;
• Strengthening resilience and countering hybrid threats.
“These priorities reflect the vision of our Chairmanship: to build on the legacy of the SEECP through practical initiatives, inclusive dialogue and sustainable regional leadership. Together we can continue to shape a resilient, inclusive and globally connected South-East Europe,” Georgiev further stated in his address to his colleagues.
