Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev took part in a working breakfast of the Foreign Ministers in a quadrilateral format (B4) – Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Croatia, held during High-Level Week and the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The four top diplomats of the EU’s Balkan Member States reviewed the European integration of their six neighbours that are still outside the Union, and discussed connectivity and military mobility in the region.
“EU enlargement is a natural priority for all of us. Although our national positions on individual dossiers do not always coincide, we share common strategic interests, which provide a solid basis for close coordination and cooperation on enlargement policy and related issues on the EU agenda,” Minister Georgiev said in his address.
Bulgaria’s top diplomat further underlined to his colleagues that adherence to unanimity is key to preserving the integrity of the decision-making process. “I am convinced that we share a common understanding of the importance of good-neighbourly relations and respect for the rights of persons belonging to national minorities as essential elements of the enlargement process,” he added.
Minister Georgiev also stressed that Bulgaria has taken its own path in order to endorse the European Consensus of July 2022, which is based on human rights as a core EU value. “We remain determined to uphold it and will not accept any actions by Skopje, whether political or legal, aimed at circumventing, renegotiating or undermining it. I will continue to urge other Member States to avoid any ambiguity that could encourage Skopje to persist with unconstructive actions and statements.”
On the issue of connectivity, Georg Georgiev noted that, together with its EU partners and neighbours, Bulgaria is actively working to expand and complete road and rail infrastructure, as well as energy and digital connectivity, so as to broaden the economic, transport and energy opportunities of the entire region.
“The continuation of the B4 format is important, as it demonstrates how regional frameworks can strengthen and better coordinate the European Union, especially when, as in the case of the B4 initiative, they focus on common strategic priorities such as enlargement and connectivity,” underlined Foreign Minister Georgiev.
