The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, took part in a joint statement to the media together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, H.E. Mr Andrii Sybiha, and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms Kaja Kallas, ahead of the special briefing of the UN Security Council on Ukraine, held during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Bulgaria, together with the European Union, Ukraine and a number of partner states – Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom – made the following statement:
“We stand united in our solidarity with Ukraine, as the Russian Federation continues its illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression. For a fourth year now, this full-scale invasion has caused suffering, violated international law and undermined global peace.
The international community must remain united in its response to these grave violations and in defending Ukraine’s freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
We call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease hostilities and to enter into meaningful negotiations with Ukraine. Deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are war crimes and must stop at once. Russia bears responsibility for the escalation of the conflict, for the aerial assaults against Ukrainian cities, as well as for the systematic violations of the airspace of EU Member States.
Our support for Ukraine remains unwavering – militarily, economically, politically and diplomatically. Only a just and lasting peace, grounded in international law and the UN Charter, can bring an end to this aggression. We urge all global partners to use their influence and to exert maximum pressure on Russia with the aim of securing the immediate cessation of the war. We stand with Ukraine and with the right of its people to peace, freedom and a future within a united, free and secure Europe.”
Minister Georgiev stressed that Bulgaria will continue to be an active participant in international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, as well as in supporting Ukraine at all levels – within the EU, the UN and other international formats.
