Bulgaria and Georgia share a long history of traditionally excellent relations, close friendship and fruitful cooperation between our countries and our peoples,” stated Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev to Georgia’s top diplomat, Ms Maka Bochorishvili. The two met today in New York during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Minister Georgiev expressed disappointment with the decision of the Georgian authorities to suspend the country’s EU membership negotiations until 2028, particularly in view of the strong support among the Georgian public for accession to the Union. “Bulgaria remains ready to extend a hand to Georgia, whenever and if the country decides to take the necessary steps towards restoring its European course and its path towards EU accession,” Georgiev said. “We believe that the European choice of the Georgian people is strong and clear, and that it belongs in a united Europe,” he emphasised.
During the meeting, emphasis was also placed on the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. “Bulgaria and Georgia have very good economic relations. We are pleased that our country ranks among Georgia’s top ten trading partners. Georgia is an important economic and strategic partner for us,” Minister Georgiev noted.
The Foreign Ministers of Bulgaria and Georgia also discussed opportunities for further deepening economic cooperation between the two states, enhancing infrastructure connectivity between Europe and Asia, and implementing projects of mutual interest in the fields of energy, transport and communications.
The conversation also highlighted Georgia’s important role in ensuring security and stability in the Black Sea region, including in the current complex geopolitical context. “Bulgaria is interested in maintaining security and stability in the South Caucasus and the wider Black Sea region, especially in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Georgiev underlined. He further affirmed that Bulgaria firmly supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
