Georgiev to EU foreign ministers: No change is possible to the agreed European consensus or any of its components, we expect the Republic of North Macedonia to fulfill its commitments

02 September 2025 News

Bulgaria expresses growing concern about the continued failure of the Republic of North Macedonia to fulfill its commitments to the European Union.

Minister Georg Georgiev informed in writing his colleagues from the EU Member States, as well as the European institutions, on Skopje’s latest attempts to undermine important elements of the European consensus.

The package deal approved at the European level in July 2022 remains the only possible path forward for this candidate country towards EU membership. Unfortunately, instead of constructive dialogue and good-neighborly relations, we are witnessing a policy of confrontation, provocation and backtracking from concrete obligations, including a deliberate challenge to key agreements before the Constitutional Court in Skopje.

No change is possible to the agreed European consensus or any of its components. Bulgaria expects the neighboring country to implement its commitments in good faith – something repeatedly emphasized by the European Council itself.

We continue to hold that the best solution for the future of the Western Balkans is the participation of all countries in this most successful project, called the European Union. We are ready to assist Skopje in following its European path of reforms, provided that membership in a united Europe is indeed the genuine aim of its government.
