On 12 August, Minister Georg Georgiev received a delegation representing the Jordanian Association of Graduates of Bulgarian Universities, composed of Dr Haidar Ibrahim Ali, Chairman of the Board; Eng. Nabil Al-Bakri, Board Coordinator; and Dr Ali Al-Fayez, responsible for the Association’s cultural and educational initiatives. The talks covered a wide range of issues concerning the Association’s activities, its relations with the Bulgarian Embassy in Amman, and events organised to date which present Bulgaria to Jordanian society. Steps were also outlined for expanding existing projects, particularly in the fields of agricultural and light-industry research, as well as their practical application. Minister Georgiev described Bulgarian alumni as a bridge for Bulgaria both to Jordan and to the wider Middle East. The Bulgarian alumni noted that, wherever they are, they carry Bulgaria in their hearts, owing to the education and support they received here in the past. One of the Association’s specific activities is to support the Sts Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian Sunday School in Amman, which now has around 40 pupils. The meeting also addressed ways of broadening contacts between graduates of Bulgarian higher education institutions and alumni from other countries in the regionThe Jordanian graduates shared their views on the current difficult situation in the Middle East. Minister Georgiev assured them that, through Bulgaria’s standing with the parties to the conflict, and despite the objective challenges, the country continues to work towards establishing a lasting and just peace in the region. The Jordanian Association of Graduates of Bulgarian Universities was originally founded under the name “Club of Graduates of Bulgarian Universities” in May 2000. Since the 1960s, around 3,500 nationals of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have completed higher education in Bulgaria in various academic disciplines. Many of them have held – and continue to hold – senior positions in Jordan’s state institutions, while others have achieved significant professional success in the private sector both in Jordan and abroad.
