The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, participated in the informal videoconference meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, held on 11 August 2025.
During the meeting, the ministers discussed recent developments in diplomatic efforts to end Russian aggression against Ukraine, coordination with transatlantic partners in the context of the forthcoming meeting between the Presidents of the United States and Russia in Alaska, as well as the continuation of the European Union’s solidarity and comprehensive support for Ukraine.
In his remarks, Minister Georgiev welcomed the firm commitment of US President Donald Trump to halting hostilities and achieving peace through negotiations. Bulgaria’s Foreign Diplomat underlined: “Any peace agreement must be sustainable and just, respecting the principles of international law and a rules-based international order. Until this is achieved, our comprehensive support for Ukraine will continue. Peace is not simply the absence of war; it must serve as the foundation for long-term stability, security and prosperity, both for Ukraine and for Europe as a whole.” The Bulgarian Minister further stressed that the sanctions imposed on Russia have demonstrated their effectiveness, and that they must be strengthened until Russian military aggression against Ukraine comes to an end.
The Foreign Ministers of EU Member States also discussed the current situation in the Middle East and the urgent need to accelerate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the civilian population of the Gaza Strip. “Bulgaria expresses deep concern over the expansion of the military operation in the Gaza Strip. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas in inhumane conditions, which would enable the continuation of ceasefire efforts. Humanitarian aid intended for the residents of Gaza, who are in a critical condition, must be increased without delay,” declared the Bulgarian Foreign Minister. In addition, Minister Georgiev reaffirmed Bulgaria’s readiness, together with its EU partners, to continue pursuing intensive and targeted efforts towards a lasting resolution of the conflict in the Middle East, based on the two-state solution principle.
