“Following the summit in The Hague, NATO emerges more united, with a strong commitment to enhanced security and defence. The decision to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 is a logical step,” stated Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev during the forum “NATO After The Hague '25: The Bulgarian Dimension 2025–2035”, organised by the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria.
The Foreign Minister noted that “NATO and EU membership is the reality in which Bulgaria has developed as a state and society.” In his speech, he stressed that “NATO and the EU are not external structures – they are a way of life. My generation takes them for granted.“.
“We are just 400 km from the front – in the Black Sea, we are a frontline region of the war. Bulgaria contributes to regional security and has both the right and the responsibility to be an active part of the global security architecture,” emphasised Georgiev.
Minister Georgiev stated that Bulgaria will continue to invest in its defence capabilities and support the enhanced NATO presence in the region.
“Defence investment is not expenditure; it is a guarantee of stability. We will support Ukraine and invest in ourselves. In The Hague, a collective commitment by member states was reaffirmed – to contribute to a more secure, more stable, and more peaceful world,” Georg Georgiev concluded.
