Position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

In connection with inquiries received regarding the presence of a foreign diplomat at the protest held in the capital on 16 July this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria would like to express the following position:
The Ministry places great value on the active and constructive dialogue with the diplomatic corps accredited in the country, as well as on the good spirit of cooperation with foreign missions carrying out their mandates on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The Ministry underscores the importance of upholding the principles of respect and impartiality towards the domestic political processes of the host country, as a basis for maintaining a respectful tone and mutual trust between institutions.
In this context, the Ministry wishes to appeal to the representatives of diplomatic missions in the country and their heads to exercise particular care and professional sensitivity with regard to their public appearances, in order to avoid the possibility of their actions being instrumentalised for domestic political purposes. Any direct or indirect involvement in national political processes risks placing diplomatic representatives in a position incompatible with the nature of their mandate and the functions of the diplomatic service as a whole.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains deeply committed and firmly dedicated to maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with all its partners and expresses confidence that good diplomatic practice will continue to be a guiding principle in the relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and the foreign missions represented in the country.
