02 July 2025 News

On 2 July 2025, political consultations were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria with the Republic of Chile – the first such consultations in 15 years.

Prior to the start of the plenary discussions, the Chilean delegation was received and welcomed by Mr Nikolay Pavlov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their willingness to intensify the political dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as trade and investment, new technologies, artificial intelligence, scientific research, and others.

On the Bulgarian side, the consultations were led by Mr Todor Stoyanov, Director-General for Bilateral Relations, and on the Chilean side – by Mr Rodrigo Olsen, Secretary-General for Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also participating on behalf of Chile was the Ambassador of Chile to Bulgaria (resident in Bucharest), Mr Julio Bravo.

Mr Stoyanov welcomed the guests and described the current political consultations as an excellent opportunity to inject fresh impetus into the shared aspiration to deepen bilateral relations and cooperation across a range of priority areas. A broad spectrum of issues related to the political and sectoral dialogue between the two countries was discussed, along with significant regional and global topics. The interaction within international organisations and forums, as well as the mutual support for candidatures, was highly appreciated. The considerable potential for strengthening cooperation in the field of trade and economic relations was noted, and a shared interest was expressed in expanding collaboration in the area of science.

Special attention was devoted to the excellent Bulgarian-Chilean cooperation in the field of Antarctic research.

The Chilean side confirmed its political support for Bulgaria’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Both sides highly valued the partnership between the European Union and Chile, to the development of which Bulgaria actively contributes.
