The National Assembly ratified the NATO accession protocols for Sweden and Finland

13 July 2022 News

Today, the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria ratified the protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty on the accession of the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Sweden to NATO.

Bulgaria welcomes the membership of the two countries, which are our close partners in the European Union, with the firm conviction that it will contribute significantly to strengthening security in the Euro-Atlantic area. The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO will open additional opportunities in the area of bilateral cooperation.

The two countries submitted their applications for membership of the Alliance on 18 May 2022, and on 5 July at the NATO headquarters in Brussels the permanent representatives of the member states signed the protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty on their accession.

Together with Sweden and Finland, NATO will have 32 members.
