The Ministry of Foreign Affairs supported the campaign to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - November 25, entitled "Orange World: Let's End Violence Now!" The Minister of Foreign Affairs Svetlan Stoev and the Ambassadors of the EU Member States, Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom demonstrated their support for the campaign at an event organized in front of the National Theatre in the capital by the Slovenian and Austrian embassies. Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov also took part in the initiative.
The orange colour of the messages was chosen by the UN and symbolizes the expectation of a better future without violence against women.
Violence against women and girls remains one of the most widespread and devastating human rights violations in the modern world. The consequences of the pandemic further exacerbated the problem, creating a kind of "shadow pandemic".
On this day, more than anyone else, we must remind ourselves that silence, stereotypes and stigma have no place in any democratic and tolerant society like Bulgaria. The way to deal with the problem is through the high level of awareness of each person, so that this type of violence can be eradicated forever.
The UNiTE campaign, dedicated to ending violence against women, will also start this year. It includes 16 days of action, led by the UN Secretary-General and UN-Women, and aims to raise awareness around the world. The campaign will end on December 10, 2021 with the celebration of the International Human Rights Day.
