Bulgaria Asks UK Government to Explain Quarantine for Bulgarian Nationals

03 July 2020 News

Acting on orders of Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ekaterina Zaharieva, the Bulgarian Embassy in London has sent a note to the British government with a request for an explanation of why Bulgaria has been removed from the list of countries whose nationals are exempt from quarantine as of 10 July.

Minister Zaharieva also spoke to Wendy Morton, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and asked for an explanation on the decision taken.

The note by the Bulgarian Embassy in London seeks an explanation of the criteria on which the British decision is based because other countries on the list are experiencing a greater coronavirus morbidity rate than Bulgaria.  The Embassy stated that Bulgaria has some of the lowest levels of spread of the virus.

“The timely and effective measures against the spread of the virus in Bulgaria have resulted in there being only 2 281 active cases,” the Embassy stated. “The Black Sea coast is practically free of COVID-19 and has been visited by thousands of tourists from more than 35 countries this summer,” the note reads.
