03 July 2020 News

Deputy Foreign Minister Milen Lyutskanov congratulated Bulgaria’s two new youth delegates to the UN for 2020-2021 at a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

Kristiana Stoyanova and Todor Rogoshev are the young people who won the national competition.

Kristiana Stoyanova has a Bachelor’s degree in history and a Master’s in Crises, Conflicts and Diplomacy from Sofia University. She also has a Master’s degree in International Relations from Utrecht University. During and after her studies, she took part in various exchanges and internships, including at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Rome, the Bulgarian Embassy in The Hague and the European Commission's Directorate General for Education and Culture.

Todor Rogoshev graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Paisiy Hilendarski University of Plovdiv. His main professional interests are international law and international relations. He is currently a volunteer at the Big Brother, Big Sister Association and a member of the managing boards of the following not-for-profit associations: Erga Omnes International Law Centre, Debates Club, Plovdiv, and Centre for Dispute Resolution, Plovdiv.

In his address, Deputy Minister Lyutskanov greeted all eight candidates for the outstanding competence they demonstrated despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis. “It gives me great pleasure to see such young and enthusiastic people. You are the generation that should prepare the new world,” Lyutskanov said.

He thanked the Bulgarian UN Society and the institutions that are implementing this program. The Bulgarian UN Youth Delegates program has been coordinated for 14 years now by the Bulgarian UN Society in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The UN is an especially important organization and has been the backbone of peace after World War II and a source of stability. I am happy that you are the people who want to work there,” Deputy Minister Lyutskanov told the participants in the competition.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the UN and the 65th anniversary of Bulgaria’s accession to the UN.

Before announcing the names of the new youth delegates, Valeri Yotov, Director if the UN and Cooperation for Development Directorate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the commission, greeted Bogomila Kormanova and Minko Daskalov, the Bulgarian youth delegates who served during the 2019-2020 period, for their participation in the session of the United Nations Working Party (CONUN) on 21 January. This was the first time in which UN youth delegates from 19 European countries took part in the Working Party and their participation was praised as historical.

The two Bulgarian UN youth delegates have a mandate of 18 months and will join the Bulgarian delegation to the UN General Assembly and the Commission for Social Development of the UN Economic and Social Council.

Young people from about 40 countries in all parts of the world hold the position of UN youth delegate. With its UN Youth Delegate Program Bulgaria has joined the leading nations in Europe and around the world that recognize young people as equal partners in the decision-making processes at national and international levels.
