Protocol of Republic of Macedonia accession to North Atlantic Treaty signed

06 February 2019 News

On February 6, 2019, at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, representatives of the Member States of the Alliance signed a protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty on the accession of the Republic of Macedonia to NATO under the name ‘Republic of North Macedonia’. The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Nikola Dimitrov, was in attendance at the signing ceremony.

Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, noted the historic significance of that event for the Alliance and its future member state.

In his remarks, Minister Dimitrov acknowledged the efforts of the leaders of the Republic of Macedonia and Greece for arriving at the historic Prespa Accord, as well as the encouraging impetus which the accession process received from the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation. He also underscored that reforms, including those in the area of defense, will continue beyond the signing of the accession protocol.

‘The doors of NATO stay open for those countries that meet the standards of the Alliance and adhere to the principles of democracy, rule of law and individual rights and liberties,’ Stoltenberg said at the press conference after the signing of the accession protocol.

Following the ratification of the protocol by all NATO Member States, the Republic of Macedonia will be invited, as ‘Republic of North Macedonia’, to ratify the North Atlantic Treaty. The process will be completed by delivering the ratification documents to the US, the depository for the North Atlantic Treaty, following which the Republic of Macedonia, under its new name, will become the thirtieth member of the Alliance.
