Ramallah marks 3rd of March

06 March 2018 News

Bulgaria’s National Day was marked with a reception in Ramallah on March 3rd. The festive occasion gathered over 100 guests: members of the diplomatic corps, heads and members of Palestinian political parties, members of the Executive Committee of the PLO, deputy ministers of foreign affairs and other government agencies, businessmen, members of the Bulgarian community and Palestinian nationals who have received their education in Bulgaria and are friends of this country.

In his speech Ambassador Alexander Savov emphasized the significance of that day in Bulgarian history, and singled out the role of Russia, jointly with a few other peoples, for the liberation of Bulgaria. The head of the Bulgarian mission in Ramallah made a brief review of the excellent bilateral relations while also pointing to the potential for further improvement. He recalled the role of Bulgaria as the rotational President of the Council of the EU and the importance which the Union attaches to the Middle East peace process. Ambassador Savov gave special thanks to the Palestinian-Bulgarian Friendship Association for its substantial contribution to the promotion of cultural and spiritual links between the two peoples, while also familiarizing those in attendance with the tradition of the martenitsa, the pair of red-and-white woolen tassels inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Every guest received a martenitsa as a gift.

On behalf of the Palestinian side, the event heard a congratulatory speech by Dr. Ahmed Majdalani, member of the PLO Executive Committee and representative of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who wished the Bulgarian people prosperity on the occasion of their National Day and underscored that the thousands of Palestinians who have studied and worked in Bulgaria constitute a valuable asset for the building and advancement of Palestinian institutions and the whole of society.
