06 December 2016 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Mitov paid a working visit to Washington, D.C. Within the framework of the visit Minister Mitov conferred with Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Victoria Nuland, took part in discussions with representatives of think tanks and research institutes, and participated in an international political leaders’ forum organised by the International Republican Institute and the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies.

Minister Mitov discussed with Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland  the current developments of the internal situation in Bulgaria and the US in the wake of the presidential elections. He stressed the importance of strengthening the Transatlantic link and furthering the strategic relations between the two countries. Minister Mitov expects the new administration to continue the staunch US commitment to the security of NATO allies and adherence to democratic standards in Europe and the rest of the world.

At meetings at research institutes and think tanks which are expected to play an important part in shaping the new US administration’s policies: the International Republican Institute, The Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, Minister Mitov discussed the political and economic challenges facing Europe and extended messages on a further strengthening of the Transatlantic link as a guarantee of security and prosperity of democracies on both sides of the Atlantic. He shared his view about the need of political and economic consolidation of the democratic space and its clear distancing from autocratic regimes.
Minister Mitov was a keynote speaker at a forum for political leaders, organised by the International Republican Institute and the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies.  Among  the participants in the discussion were members and officials of the US Congress, Members of the European Parliament, members of the parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia and Ukraine, and heads of US research institutes and think tanks.

In his statement, Minister Mitov set forth his vision about strengthening of the community of liberal democracies on the basis of standing up for common values and interests, and resisting the attempts of autocratic regimes to challenge the international legal order, undermine the Transatlantic link and draw new lines of division in Europe. Minister Mitov expects a quick start of successful cooperation with the new US administration and coordination of a common agenda based on a fair sharing of responsibilities for guaranteeing the security and prosperity of the allies on both sides of the Atlantic.
