Today, at the request of the Russian side, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Eleonora Mitrofanova was received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She handed over a note verbale demanding, in an ultimatum tone, the withdrawal by 12.00 on July 1, 2022, of the note verbale on the declared personae non gratae officials of the Russian missions abroad. The note verbale reads that otherwise “a question will be raised with the Russian leadership without delay for closing the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bulgaria”.

The European Union regrets the unjustified threat of the Russian Federation to sever diplomatic ties with Bulgaria in response to Bulgaria’s decision, fully in line with international law, to expel 70 Russian Embassy staff who were acting in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
