24 April 2015 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Mitov received today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Sofia Abdollah Norouzi.

The head of Bulgarian diplomacy welcomed the Iranian diplomat and praised the recent positive development in the negotiations over Iran's nuclear program in Lausanne, which paves the way for the full and dynamic development of the relations of EU member states, including Bulgaria, with Iran. Minister Mitov gave a very good evaluation of the bilateral Bulgarian-Iranian political, economic and cultural relations and expressed hope for their further deepening.

For his part, the Iranian Ambassador praised the bilateral relations and welcomed the strengthening of Bulgarian-Iranian economic ties, whose prospects were discussed at a special meeting with the Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. Particularly important is the development of the relations between the two countries in the field of energy and transport, which received new impetus after the Third Bulgaria-Iran Joint Transportation Committee held on 19-22 April 2015 in Tehran.

In the following conversation, the two diplomats discussed the highly complicated situation in the Middle East. The Iranian Ambassador handed to Minister Daniel Mitov a letter from Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which sets out the Iranian position on the situation in Yemen. He emphasized that the situation in Yemen will inevitably affect the EU countries. Minister Mitov expressed concern over the escalating tensions in Yemen and noted that the situation is worrying Bulgaria and the EU as a whole, and the only way to overcome the problems there is through continuation of the national political dialogue. Minister Mitov expressed the readiness of Bulgaria and the EU to contribute accordingly to resolving the Yemeni conflict, and all conflicts in the region, and to build a new and different Middle East.
