US is a key ally and a strategic partner of Bulgaria

22 April 2015 News

US is a key ally and a strategic partner of Bulgaria. The strategic dialogue between our two countries provides an excellent basis for deepening the bilateral relations and the practical cooperation, said Minister Daniel Mitov at today’s meeting with US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Hoyt Yee, who is visiting Bulgaria. The two diplomats discussed the work of the Bulgarian-US working groups on deepening the strategic partnership as agreed during the visit to Sofia of US Secretary of State John Kerry in January 2015 in the field of security and defense, energy security, economic cooperation and others.

The talks focused on the need to enhance the energy security of Bulgaria and the region. Energy diversification is a key element in this regard and diversifying sources and routes of natural gas is a priority of the Bulgarian government, said Minister Mitov. We recognize the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor and all related projects, he added, stressing the importance Bulgaria attaches to the construction of the interconnector between Bulgaria and Greece.

Hoyt Yee noted that attaining economic growth is particularly important for Bulgaria's security and stability. The fastest way for this is attracting foreign investment and we are ready to work for improving the investment climate and the materialization of the untapped opportunities, he said.

Daniel Mitov and Hoyt Yee also discussed the situation in Ukraine. They agreed that a change of the sanctions policy depends on the implementation of the Minsk agreements. The two diplomats said that the Euro-Atlantic community must show unity in the protection of its common values and principles.
