Minister Daniel Mitov met with Sir Andrew Burns, Chairman of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance

10 October 2014 News

On 9 October Minister Daniel Mitov met with Sir Andrew Burns, UK Envoy for Post-Holocaust Issues and Chairman of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. They discussed Bulgaria’s perspectives to change its status from an observer to a full member of the Alliance.

We can not afford to forget what happened in Europe during the Holocaust, because this is the only way to prevent genocide, said Minister Mitov. The rescue of Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War is no coincidence and it proves that it was possible to stop the Holocaust, he added.

For his part, Andrew Burns emphasized that Bulgaria has its place as an active, full member of the Alliance and can contribute to an open and fruitful debate on topics related to the work of the international organization. He praised the exhibition “The Power of Civil Society: the Fate of Jews in Bulgaria, 1940-1944," presented in the British Parliament in December 2013 within the international program marking the 70th anniversary of this significant event in the modern Bulgarian history.

The exhibition, organized by the State Institute for Culture to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Albena Taneva, Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski ", contains 21 panels with photographs, facsimiles and text that follows the development of  the events - on the international stage, the position of the authorities and the reaction of the Bulgarian public.
