Violence in Syria must cease

10 April 2011 News

Calling for an immediate end to the violence and for diligent reforms, Minister Nickolay Mladenov turned to his Syrian hosts during his one day visit to Damascus. At the meeting with President Bashar al-Assad, Minister Mladenov expressed hope that the cycle of violence in the country will be broken. In response, President Assad expounded the course of reforms in the public, economic and political spheres, which he will entrust to the new government.

"We came to hear your evaluation of the situation because Syria is of key significance, particularly against the backdrop of the events in North Africa and the Middle East" said Nickolay Mladenov to his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Muallem. The two Foreign Ministers agreed to seek for opportunities to employ the Bulgarian experience in relation to reforms of media, electoral, and local administration legislation.
