We expect a clear resolution from theUN Security Council on Syria

“At this time, no specific request has been received forBulgaria to support or participate in any military operation or other form of direct intervention in Syria,” Kristian Vigenin told a news conference after the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers. The Foreign Minister emphasisedthat there is no callfor speculation on this issue. “When and if ourassistance is requested, we will declare ourposition,”he said.

The Foreign Minister welcomedthe position of the United Nationsand said that he expected the UN Security Council to accept the responsibility to come up with a clear resolution, while also further strengthening political efforts to resolve the crisis, including through the long-intended conference in Geneva.

Minister Vigenin said that today there wouldbe a NATO meeting at ambassadorial level, which would discuss the situation in Syria. “We awaitthe results of the investigation by the UN mission and in accordance with them,we will plan the steps and the position of our country,”he said.

The topic of Syria will be included in the agenda of the informal meeting of foreign ministers of EUmember states to be held on September 6 and 7 in Vilnius. Also participating in the meeting will beU.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

ThePrime Minister’s Security Council will meet on August 30. At this meeting, there will be discussions ofcurrent developments in Syria, potential threats to the security of Bulgaria and possible refugee flow to our country. The Foreign Minister said that at today's regular meeting of the Government, it was decided to allocate 565 000 levato be used to create additional capacity for temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.

Kristian Vigenin said that inthe first seven months of 2013,the number of refugees was five times higher than in the previous year “At this stage, however, there is no direct threat, these are preventive measures,that every serious country should take," he said. In addition, the Interior Ministry will strengthen control atthe border with Turkey.
