Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of North Macedonia in Sofia Summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Following the Arson Attack on Two Bulgarian Diplomatic Vehicles on 15 June 2026

16 June 2026 News

The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of the Republic of North Macedonia in Sofia was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today in connection with the arson attack on two Bulgarian diplomatic vehicles parked in front of the official entrance to Bulgaria’s Embassy in Skopje on 15 June 2026.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Christo Polendakov stressed that Bulgaria strongly condemns this demonstrative act of aggression, unprecedented in the history of bilateral relations, which endangered not only the health and lives of the staff of the Bulgarian Embassy but also residents of the capital of the Republic of North Macedonia who happened to be in the vicinity at the time of the attack. Bulgaria takes note of the statements issued by the official institutions of the neighbouring country and of the prompt action taken by the competent authorities, which led to the arrest of the perpetrator. At the same time, we expect an effective investigation and judicial proceedings that will demonstrate unequivocally that such acts are unacceptable.

Deputy Minister Polendakov further underlined that upholding the rule of law and taking effective measures to prevent and combat hate crimes are essential if a country is to safeguard its European future.

Any attempts to intimidate Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia are unacceptable, and the Bulgarian state will continue to make full use of all available mechanisms to counter such actions.
