Minister of Foreign Affairs Nadezhda Neynsky held a meeting with Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, today in Brussels. During the meeting, the two discussed the evolving security environment and transatlantic relations.

Minister Neynsky highlighted the decisive role of North Atlantic Treaty Organization in guaranteeing the security and defence of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as the need to preserve transatlantic unity in addressing common threats and challenges.

Particular emphasis was placed on the implementation of the decisions adopted at the NATO Hague Summit regarding increased defence spending, as well as the fair sharing of burdens and responsibilities among Allies. Special attention was also given to building the necessary capabilities to strengthen the Alliance’s deterrence and defence, including along the Eastern Flank and in the Black Sea Region.

On the eve of the anniversary of the start of the aggressive war waged by Russia, the Bulgarian side reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine, and discussed possibilities for continuing this support within the mechanisms of NATO. Efforts aimed at achieving a lasting and just peace were welcomed

Minister Neynsky also underscored the need for North Atlantic Treaty Organization to maintain its focus on the Western Balkans and to strengthen the region’s resilience in view of the continuing complex threats and challenges, including the influence of external actors.
