The prima of Bulgarian pop music, Lili Ivanova, was awarded the “Golden Laurel Branch” honorary badge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria. The award was presented by Minister Georg Georgiev during a solemn ceremony held at the Ministry.
The distinction was bestowed on the eve of her upcoming concert on 24 May—the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius—at the Olympia Hall in Paris, an event of exceptional symbolism for Bulgarian cultural diplomacy.
The entire leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of foreign missions attended the elegant and emotionally charged ceremony, graced by the presence of Lili Ivanova herself.
In his speech, Minister Georgiev emphasised that the award—the Ministry's highest honour—is an expression of deep institutional and personal gratitude for Lili Ivanova's extraordinary contribution to strengthening Bulgaria's positive international image through cultural diplomacy. He noted that her long and consistent creative journey, as well as the international acclaim she enjoys, far exceed the symbolism of any single award. With profound respect, Minister Georgiev pointed out that any award Lili Ivanova receives is but a "speck of dust" compared to what she has done for Bulgarian culture and for Bulgaria.
Visibly moved, Lili Ivanova accepted the honour and expressed her gratitude, sharing that such recognition from a Bulgarian state institution holds special value in both her professional and personal life.
In a pleasant atmosphere, she spoke to the diplomats about the emotions behind every song, her choice of lyrics, and her insistence on singing in the pure Bulgarian language.
The diplomats had the opportunity to ask questions about her career, and Lili Ivanova spoke candidly about past meetings, travels, and concerts.
The prima also shared the philosophy underpinning her creative and personal longevity: to always look forward. "There is nothing behind us; everything is in the future!" she stressed, noting that her daily life is governed by iron discipline.
"I think only of my songs and my audience, of which you are a part," she told the diplomats. She also spoke about her upcoming Paris concert and a charity performance in support of the Union of Bulgarian Actors’ Fund.
The “Golden Laurel Branch” honorary badge is the highest distinction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Traditionally awarded to politicians, statesmen, and diplomats, as well as Bulgarian and foreign citizens who have contributed to promoting Bulgarian spirituality, science, culture, and economy abroad.
Lili Ivanova is among the first representatives of the cultural sphere to receive this prize.
