Bulgaria Marks International Human Rights Day
10 December 2025 News
On 10 December, the world marks International Human Rights Day. On this date in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – the first universal document to proclaim the fundamental principles of the inalienable rights of every human being. This landmark document serves as the starting point for the subsequent development of a comprehensive body of international treaties, instruments and mechanisms designed to ensure the observance and protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms.
Against the backdrop of dynamic geopolitical changes and challenges to the international order, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights retains its enduring relevance as a recognition of our shared humanity and equality. The Universal Declaration also symbolises our unwavering commitment to a peaceful and just world.
Bulgaria consistently upholds the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and fulfils in good faith the obligations arising from the international human rights treaties to which it is a party. Bulgaria’s commitment to the promotion, observance and protection of human rights was reaffirmed during the successful Universal Periodic Review on human rights, held on 6 November 2025 in Geneva. International recognition of the achievements made by our country in the field of human rights is reflected in Bulgaria’s election, for the second time, as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 term.
International Human Rights Day reminds us that these rights are universal, indivisible, inalienable and interdependent. Bulgaria reaffirms its unwavering determination to continue to adhere to the principles of the Universal Declaration and its readiness to actively contribute to efforts to promote and protect human rights, both at national and international level.
