Minister Georg Georgiev took part in the annual meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), held in Vienna under the Chairmanship of Finland.
In a year marking the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Helsinki Final Act, which enshrines the fundamental principles of the European security architecture, the discussions were once again dominated by Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and its devastating consequences for Europe’s security and for the Organisation itself.
In his address to the plenary session, Minister Georgiev underlined that, as a result of Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine, Europe is facing one of its most insecure periods in decades.
Bulgaria’s chief diplomat reaffirmed Bulgaria’s strong support for Ukraine and welcomed the efforts of the United States to achieve a just and lasting peace, based on international law, in coordination with Ukraine and its European partners.
In the context of the discussion launched earlier in the year on modernising and improving the functionality of the OSCE, Minister Georgiev stressed that these efforts must aim to preserve the Organisation’s fundamental role as a forum for dialogue, conflict prevention and accountability for violations of the Helsinki principles.
On the eve of the meeting, Minister Georgiev took part in an informal dinner with the participation of Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, dedicated to solidarity with and support for Ukraine, as well as to exploring ways to enhance OSCE assistance, including for future recovery and resilience-building in post-war Ukraine.
