Minister Georgiev Participated in the Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels

03 December 2025 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, took part in the meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers held on 3 December in Brussels. The meeting took place at a crucial moment for the international efforts aimed at ending the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine.

Allies reaffirmed that the Alliance remains the fundamental guarantor of credible deterrence, collective defence and sustained transatlantic unity. They also reiterated the principle that decisions concerning NATO are taken solely by the Allies.

In his statement, Minister Georgiev underlined the need for consistency and strategic resilience in the context of an increasingly complex international environment. “We are at a historic moment that requires resolve, responsibility and a clear commitment to our shared values and security,” Bulgaria’s chief diplomat stated.

He welcomed the active diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a cessation of hostilities and developing a framework for sustainable peace. “Diplomatic initiatives must clearly reflect the positions of Ukraine and Europe, so that peace is not only achieved, but is just and lasting,” Minister Georgiev noted. He stressed that Bulgaria remains firmly committed to supporting Ukraine, as this constitutes support for the international legal order and for the principle that force cannot be allowed to prevail over law.

During the meeting, the Allies discussed increasing investments in defence, security and stability in the Western Balkans, NATO’s approach to its southern neighbourhood, and other key topics.

A session of the NATO–Ukraine Council was also held, with the participation of Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The discussion focused on the continued support for Ukraine and the shared objective of achieving a just and lasting peace, underpinned by reliable security mechanisms. Views were also exchanged on the further development of NATO–EU cooperation in support of Ukraine.

The Allies noted the significant progress made in strengthening the Alliance’s capabilities in response to the long-term threat posed by Russia to Euro-Atlantic security. Initial guidance was also outlined for the preparations for the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara.
