Meeting Between Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand

Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, held a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Ms Anita Anand, on the margins of the Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels.
The meeting was convened at the initiative of the Bulgarian side as part of the joint efforts to intensify high-level political dialogue with Canada and provided an opportunity to discuss key areas in the bilateral relationship, as well as concrete steps for its further development and strengthening.
Minister Georgiev emphasised that Canada is a priority foreign policy partner and a trusted NATO ally of Bulgaria. The two Ministers reaffirmed the strong commitment of both Bulgaria and Canada to further deepening their mutually beneficial partnership, based on shared democratic values, converging positions on major regional and global issues, and a common vision for strengthening the international rules-based order.
The Ministers highlighted the need to maintain a regular political dialogue, including through high-level bilateral visits, and identified 2026 – the year marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations – as an excellent opportunity for further deepening the partnership.
In the field of security and defence, Bulgaria and Canada reaffirmed their strong commitment to strengthening NATO’s Eastern Flank and security in the Black Sea region.
Minister Georgiev expressed his gratitude for Canada’s participation in the Mine Countermeasures Black Sea initiative (MCM Black Sea) and underscored the importance of the new joint efforts under the “Eastern Sentry” initiative.
The two Ministers also discussed opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation in the defence industry.
Economic and trade cooperation featured prominently in the conversation. Minister Georgiev highlighted the significant growth in bilateral trade in recent years, supported by the provisional application of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada.
The Ministers reviewed opportunities for increasing investment in areas of strategic importance for Bulgaria – energy, high technology, innovation and infrastructure. Minister Georgiev outlined Bulgaria’s priorities in the field of energy security, including diversification of supply sources, investment in the green transition and the development of nuclear energy. He emphasised the potential for closer cooperation with Canada in the fields of clean technologies, renewable energy and nuclear safety.
In conclusion, the two Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to deepening and further enhancing the partnership between Bulgaria and Canada, and expressed their readiness to advance concrete initiatives in the interest of security, economic development and the well-being of the citizens of both countries.
