On 28 November 2025, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikolay Pavlov, received the copies of the Letters of Credence of the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Bulgaria, H.E. Mr Chikahisa Sumi.
Both sides expressed their high appreciation for the upward trajectory of bilateral relations, underscored by the establishment of a strategic partnership in May 2025, the numerous high-level and top-level visits carried out since, and Bulgaria’s participation in EXPO 2025 in Osaka.
Deputy Minister Pavlov highlighted the importance of maintaining this positive momentum by further developing cooperation in specific areas of mutual interest. He noted that while Bulgaria is well known in Japan as the country of yogurt and roses, the aim is also to promote the modern profile of Bulgaria as an attractive destination for business in the fields of high technology, innovation and artificial intelligence, which was one of the key messages conveyed through Bulgaria’s participation in EXPO 2025.
During the meeting, both sides also underscored the priority attached to fostering exchanges in traditional areas such as culture, science and education, tourism, and people-to-people contacts.
