25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls
25 November 2025 News
On 25 November, we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls. According to data from UN Women, one in every three women globally has experienced an act of violence at least once in her lifetime. Research shows that women have also frequently been subjected to online violence, the most widespread forms being the dissemination of false information and defamation. These figures clearly underscore the need for sustained and coordinated efforts to combat violence – both at the national and international levels.
As a Member State of the United Nations and of the European Union, and as a current member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 term, the Republic of Bulgaria remains firmly committed to countering all forms of violence against women and girls. In recent years, the country has undertaken a number of legislative initiatives and institutional measures that have contributed to more effective prosecution of perpetrators, as well as to improved protection and support for victims.
Promoting the full enjoyment of the rights of women and girls in all areas of public life, and empowering them to participate fully and equally, remains a lasting priority of Bulgaria’s foreign policy in the field of human rights. Bulgaria actively supports international initiatives aimed at advancing gender equality and eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls – a phenomena that have no place in a modern twenty-first-century society.
